Folks always ask us, "What's the difference between an “Interior Designer” and a “Decorator”!
Ok, well... I’m here to help!
The main differences between the two are…
Interior Design is the art and science of understanding how folks interact with their living space while in their homes, as well as a home’s overall functionality for its residents.
Interior Decoration (or) "Decorating", is the furnishing or beautifying of an individual space in the home. Some would say… enhancing a home with fashionable or attractive things.
To review…, Interior Designers may decorate, but Decorators do not necessarily design.
Some other major differences are…
Interior Designers apply creative and technical solutions that become beneficial to a families quality of life.
Decorators can also be creative but in a more visual and organic way…bringing splashes of color or life to a room.
Important to note, if you’re hiring an Interior Designer to work in your home, please make sure you ask them for their certificate or license as many states have passed laws requiring Interior Designers be licensed to perform this service in your home. (You don't want to break the law just to save a couple of bucks now do you?) Plus, if things go horribly wrong you will not have a legal leg to stand on.
Conversely, Interior Decorators require no formal training or license. It doesn't mean they are not qualified, it just means choose your Decorator carefully!
